Before and after his political career, Varoufakis has been active in academia, teaching economics at universities in Greece, the UK, and the US. He’s also a prolific writer, with books like Adults in the Room offering an insider’s account of EU politics. Professor Avi Shlaim: Professor Avi Shlaim is a distinguished Israeli-British historian and Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford. Born in Baghdad in 1945 to a Jewish family, he emigrated to Israel in 1951 before moving to the United Kingdom for his education. He studied history at Jesus College, Cambridge, and earned an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics, followed by a PhD from the University of Reading.
Shlaim is renowned as one of Israel’s “New Historians,” a group of scholars who critically re-examined the traditional narratives of Israel’s founding and its early conflicts. His notable works include The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World and Collusion Across the Jordan, which challenge conventional accounts of Israeli-Arab relations. His latest book, Three Worlds: Memoirs of an Arab-Jew, intertwines personal memoir with historical analysis, exploring his identity and the broader Arab-Jewish experience.
Throughout his career, Shlaim has been a vocal critic of Israeli policies, particularly concerning the Palestinian territories. He advocates for a one-state solution that ensures equal rights for all citizens, arguing that the two-state solution has become unviable due to ongoing settlement expansion and political developments. Elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2006, Shlaim continues to contribute to academic and public discourse on Middle Eastern affairs, offering insights grounded in rigorous scholarship and personal experience.
Ilan Pappé: Ilan Pappé (born November 7, 1954, in Haifa, Israel) is an Israeli-British historian and political scientist renowned for his critical examination of Zionism and Israeli policies. Educated at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Oxford, he earned his DPhil under historians Albert Hourani and Roger Owen. Pappé is a prominent figure among Israel’s “New Historians,” a group that re-evaluated the traditional narratives of Israel’s founding, particularly the events surrounding the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. In his influential book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006), he argues that the exodus of Palestinians in 1948 was a deliberate act of ethnic cleansing, challenging mainstream Israeli historiography. Due to his outspoken views, Pappé faced significant backlash in Israel, including calls for his resignation and threats to his safety, leading him to relocate to the United Kingdom in 2007. He currently serves as a professor at the University of Exeter, where he directs the European Centre for Palestine Studies. Pappé advocates for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and supports academic boycotts of Israeli institutions as a form of protest against Israeli policies.
